Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) — What It Means & What to Do

A blue screen of death (BSOD) means Windows has hit a critical error it can't recover from. It's alarming, but it doesn't necessarily mean your computer is dying — it's Windows protecting itself by stopping before the problem causes damage.

Common Causes

Driver issues. The most common cause. A recently updated or corrupted driver — especially graphics, audio, or chipset drivers — can trigger BSODs. If the blue screen started after a Windows update or new software install, that's likely the culprit.

Failing RAM. Faulty memory can cause random blue screens, especially under load. The errors might mention "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT" or "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL."

Overheating. If your computer shuts down or blue screens during heavy use (gaming, video editing), thermal throttling may not be enough and the system crashes to protect the CPU. Clean out dust from fans and vents.

Failing hard drive or SSD. A drive that's developing bad sectors can cause blue screens, especially errors like "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR" or "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED."

Corrupted system files. Windows system files can become corrupted by bad updates, sudden power loss, or malware. Running sfc /scannow from an administrator Command Prompt can detect and repair these.

What to Do Right Now

Note the error code. The blue screen displays a stop code like "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" or a hexadecimal code like 0x0000007E. Write it down or take a photo — it helps us diagnose the issue faster.

Restart and see if it happens again. A one-off blue screen can be a fluke. If it keeps happening, especially during specific activities, there's an underlying problem.

Boot into Safe Mode if you can't get Windows to start normally. Hold Shift while clicking Restart, then navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced > Startup Settings > Safe Mode. This loads Windows with minimal drivers.

When to Get Professional Help

If blue screens are happening frequently, getting worse over time, or you can't boot Windows at all, it's time for a professional diagnosis. We can run hardware diagnostics, check drive health, test RAM, analyse crash logs, and pinpoint the exact cause. Often it's a straightforward fix once you know what's failing.
